Understanding How Your Taxi Fare is Determined

Last updated 2 years ago

Taking a taxi cab is one of the best ways to experience the City of Los Angeles. Understanding how your fare is determined will help you add a taxi ride into your budget.

The Basics

The first 1/9th mile with a taxi service costs $2.85. Each additional 1/9th of a mile adds another $0.30 to your fee, which works out to $2.70 per mile. You also get charged $0.30 for every thirty-seven seconds you keep the driver waiting. The next time you take a taxi service, consider how far you are going to estimate the cost of the fare.

Airport Pricing

Airport transportation works slightly different than regular cab fare. Every time a taxi service picks you up at LAX, you will be charged $15.00 as a minimum. There is also a $4.00 airport fee. If you and a group want to get from the airport to downtown LA, you can get a flat rate trip for $46.50. For trips from West Hollywood to LAX, you can get a $40.00 flat rate. You can get a flat rate from Santa Monica for either $30.00 or $35.00, depending on whether you are north or south of the city.

Money-Saving Tips

The best way to get the most out of your taxi ride is to travel with a few of your friends so you can split the fare. The flat rate trips are ideal when you want to go to a specific area, such as Santa Monica or downtown LA. Try to avoid keeping the driver waiting so you do not get charged extra.
